MODVA Welcomes New Formation Sergeant Major

The Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs (MODVA) has welcomed WO1 Williams Puvitanda Hekemo as its new Formation Sergeant Major (FSM), following his appointment with effect from 1 August 2026.
WO1 Hekemo takes over the position from retired WO1 Paris Vatilifa, moving from his previous role as Regimental Sergeant Major into a broader leadership position tasked with promoting discipline, professionalism, military standards and personnel welfare within the Ministry.
His appointment was formally marked during a rank confirment ceremony held at the MODVA Headquarters in Windhoek.
Speaking on behalf of the Director of Finance, Ms Marilyn Katjoe Tjijenda-Maurihungirire, Colonel Joel Akudhenga welcomed WO1 Hekemo to his new position and assured him of continued support from his office and the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) Sergeant Major’s Office.
Colonel Akudhenga expressed confidence that WO1 Hekemo’s experience and expertise would add value to the Ministry, while encouraging the continued exchange of skills, knowledge and professional experience.
Also welcoming the newly appointed FSM, NDF Sergeant Major WO1 Joseph Nambungu, urged him to remain focused on his responsibilities and to lead by example.
As Formation Sergeant Major, WO1 Hekemo will play an important role in ensuring that high standards of discipline, professionalism and military conduct are maintained. His responsibilities also include overseeing standards of cleanliness at the Ministry’s headquarters, among other duties.
MODVA congratulated WO1 Hekemo on his appointment and wished him success as he assumes his new responsibilities, expressing confidence that his leadership will contribute to strengthening discipline, professionalism and effective service within the Ministry and the NDF.
