Limpopo Boy Breaks Silence With Apology After Viral Video Triggers Public Outcry

Matome Robert Mahlatse Thoka has publicly apologised following widespread public reaction to a leaked private video that has placed him at the centre of controversy in South Africa.
In a statement dated 12 August 2026, Thoka said he was deeply remorseful over the situation and acknowledged that his actions had caused pain and disappointment to those affected.
Thoka said he only learned that the woman involved was married after the video was leaked.
He nevertheless accepted responsibility for failing to establish her marital status before becoming involved with her.
“I should have independently verified her marital status before sharing a private moment with her,” he said, describing the decision as poor judgement.
He specifically apologised to the Shai family, saying he regretted the distress caused by the situation.
Thoka also rejected the characterisation that he deliberately sought to interfere in another person’s marriage, saying he was raised in a Christian family that values marriage and family.
“I’m not a home wrecker,” he said.
The controversy has attracted significant public attention, with Thoka acknowledging that his actions have affected not only those directly involved but also his family and members of the public who had followed the matter.
He said being in the public eye comes with responsibility and that he was choosing to respond with humility rather than become defensive.
Thoka stressed that he understood an apology alone would not immediately repair the damage caused.
“I know that trust is not restored through statements. It is restored through time, accountability and actions,” he said.
He concluded by asking for an opportunity to learn from the incident and demonstrate change through his future conduct.
The statement comes amid continued public discussion of the leaked video and the circumstances surrounding it.
Thoka’s account represents his own explanation of events, while the full circumstances surrounding the incident have not been independently established from the statement alone.
