UNAM Introduces New Bachelor of Sport Coaching Degree for 2027
The University of Namibia (UNAM) is introducing a new Bachelor of Sport Coaching degree for the 2027 academic year, expanding its academic offerings in an effort to strengthen professional coaching and athlete development in Namibia.
The programme is being introduced by the Department of Physical and Sport Science and will be available at UNAM’s Main Campus, Northern Campuses and online.
UNAM says the degree is intended to respond to the growing need for professionally qualified coaches in Namibia’s expanding sports sector. The programme will equip students with specialised knowledge in areas such as coaching methodologies, athlete development, injury management, sport performance analysis, tactical planning and psychological strategies.
The university says graduates will also be expected to continue developing their professional knowledge, build professional networks and adapt coaching approaches to different cultural and sporting environments.
Who can apply?
The programme is aimed at a wide range of people interested in developing careers in sport coaching.
These include school leavers with an interest in sport and coaching, current and aspiring coaches seeking a formal qualification, physical education teachers wanting to improve their coaching skills, former athletes transitioning into coaching careers and active athletes planning careers after retirement from competition.
Sport administrators interested in athlete development and coaching management, community sport leaders, youth development practitioners, coaches working in schools, clubs, academies and sport federations without formal qualifications, as well as fitness and personal trainers seeking to specialise in sport coaching, are also among the potential applicants.
Admission requirements
Applicants must meet UNAM’s academic and sporting requirements for admission.
One admission route requires a pass in five different subjects, consisting of:
- Two subjects at NSSC level with an average grade of D or higher;
- Three subjects at NSSCO level with a C or higher; and
- English at a minimum of C at NSSCO level.
Alternatively, applicants may qualify through another route requiring a pass in five different subjects, consisting of:
- Three subjects at NSSCAS level with an average grade of A or higher;
- Two subjects at NSSCO level with a D or higher; and
- English at a minimum of C at NSSCO level.
In addition to these requirements, Biology must be passed with at least a C at NSSCO level.
Applicants must also have participated in sport at school, regional or national level, or have relevant participation in sporting events, depending on the region from which they come. UNAM notes that participation in sporting events, such as a gala or similar event, may be considered where applicable.
Prospective students may also be required to undergo an interview and physical suitability test, with the physical assessment potentially forming part of the interview process.
Applicants are required to provide evidence of their sporting participation as part of their online application.
Career opportunities
The new qualification is designed to open pathways into several areas of the sports industry.
According to UNAM, graduates could work as community sports coordinators, organising and managing community sporting programmes and events, or as recreation programme managers overseeing recreational activities in public parks and community centres.
Other potential career paths include sports facility management, school coaching, personal training, sports performance analysis, fitness centre management and sports marketing coordination.
The degree could therefore serve both aspiring coaches and individuals already involved in Namibia’s sports sector who want to obtain formal professional training.
UNAM’s introduction of the programme comes as sports organisations increasingly require individuals with specialised knowledge to support athlete development, improve coaching standards and manage sporting programmes effectively.
