The man suspected of the rape and murder of 16-year-old Myne Hoases has died after allegedly shooting at police officers during a search operation near Otavi.

According to Otjozondjupa police spokesperson and community liaison officer Inspector Maureen Mbeha, the 26-year-old suspect was found in the vicinity of a dam after evading police since Friday, 7 August.

Police had placed the area under surveillance as officers continued efforts to locate him.

Mbeha said the suspect later returned to the area and allegedly spotted police officers. He reportedly opened fire in their direction before turning the firearm on himself.

The suspect suffered a gunshot wound to the forehead and died at the scene.

His remains were subsequently taken to the Otjiwarongo police mortuary.

Police have not yet released the suspect’s identity. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, as well as the broader case, remain ongoing.
