NKURENKURU concerns over access to housing services have come under the spotlight following a stakeholder meeting held in Nkurenkuru, where Kavango West Regional Council Chairperson Hon. Fillipus Tenga criticised the absence of a National Housing Enterprise (NHE) office in the town.

Tenga welcomed the parliamentary committee to the stakeholder engagement and urged residents and other community members to participate actively in the proceedings.

He said meaningful participation by communities is important in identifying challenges affecting residents and contributing to policy changes that respond to their needs.

A key concern raised during the meeting was the lack of an NHE office in Nkurenkuru. Tenga noted that residents seeking NHE services are required to travel to Rundu, which is more than 100 kilometres away.

The distance, he said, places an additional burden on residents who need access to housing-related services, particularly those who may not have the financial means or transport to travel to another town.

The concern comes as the parliamentary committee engages stakeholders and members of the public as part of its oversight activities in Kavango West.

The stakeholder meeting provides an opportunity for residents, regional authorities and other stakeholders to raise challenges affecting communities and to make recommendations that could inform government policy and service delivery.

Tenga’s remarks have placed the accessibility of housing services among the issues requiring attention in Nkurenkuru and the wider Kavango West Region.

Community participation remains central to the oversight process, as residents are able to directly share their experiences and concerns with lawmakers.

The engagement is expected to contribute to a broader understanding of service delivery challenges in the region and possible interventions to improve access to government and public services.

The absence of an NHE office in Nkurenkuru is therefore likely to remain an important issue for consideration as the parliamentary committee continues its stakeholder consultations in the region.
