A tragic fire broke out early this morning at the Hakaseb informal settlement in Usakos, claiming the lives of six family members. The victims include a grandmother, an adult, and four children, according to Namibian Police spokesperson in the Erongo Region, Chief Inspector Ileni Shapumba.

The incident is believed to have occurred between 06h00 and 07h00, with the fire reportedly starting in the bedroom where the victims were sleeping. Curiously, the rest of the house sustained little to no damage, raising concerns about the cause and circumstances surrounding the blaze.

A young man, believed to be in his early twenties, has been taken in for questioning. While no arrests have been made, police are investigating possible links between the fire and a physical altercation he was involved in the night before. It is alleged that a group of young men followed him to his residence after the confrontation.

Chief Inspector Shapumba noted that the investigation is still in its early stages. Forensic experts from Walvis Bay are expected to arrive to assist in examining the scene and retrieving the remains.

The community of Usakos is reeling from the devastating loss, as authorities work to piece together what led to the fatal blaze.
