In a chilling incident at the Kavango River, a 25-year-old man from Mutjiku village narrowly escaped death after a violent hippopotamus attack last Thursday.

Faustinus Narongi was going about his usual routine by the river when the massive animal suddenly attacked him. The hippo sank its teeth into both of his legs, leaving him badly wounded and fighting for his life.

Speaking from his hospital bed at Rundu Intermediate Hospital, Narongi recalled the terrifying moment. “Everything happened so fast. I didn’t think I’d make it out alive, but somehow I did. God kept me alive.”

Despite managing to wrestle free from the animal, Narongi had to hide for about three hours after reaching the surface, as he was still close to the river and feared the hippo might return to attack him. Thankfully, a passing cattle herder came to his rescue, quickly called for help, and ensured Narongi was rushed to safety.

Narongi is now in stable condition and receiving medical care, but the incident has shaken the community. Locals are being urged to remain vigilant, especially near water sources where wild animals are often present.
