Kawaya Ya Kawaya Apologises to Kavango Traditional Leaders Over Controversial Post

Kawaya Anton

Kawaya Anton has issued an apology following public criticism of his recent Facebook post, acknowledging that his choice of words created the impression that he was attacking Kavango traditional leaders as a whole.

In an apology statement published on Facebook, Kawaya said his original message was intended to target specific individuals whom he believed had acted against the Vanyemba people and the VaNyemba Committee, rather than the broader Kavango leadership.

“My intention in that post was to speak only about specific individuals who, in my view, had taken actions against the Vanyemba people and the VaNyemba Committee,” he explained.

However, he acknowledged that the language used in the post, particularly the phrase “useless leaders of Kavango”, was widely interpreted as an insult directed at traditional leaders across the region.

Kawaya admitted that his wording went beyond the individuals he intended to criticise and affected the dignity of traditional leaders and the wider community.

“When I used the phrase ‘useless leaders of Kavango’ and continued with collective words such as ‘their times,’ ‘your generation,’ and ‘prepare for your ancestors’ journey,’ many people rightly understood it as an insult directed at the leadership of Kavango in general. That was never my intention, but the words I chose created that impression,” he stated.

He expressed regret over the reaction to his post, acknowledging the pain, anger and offence it caused among members of the community.

“I respect the traditional institutions of Kavango and the people who hold those positions. My disagreement was never meant to become a general attack on the chiefs or the kingdoms,” Kawaya said.

He further accepted responsibility for the misunderstanding, saying his message was directed at particular individuals and not all traditional leaders in Kavango.

“The language I used was careless and created a wider meaning than I intended. I take full responsibility for that failure in communication,” he added.

Kawaya said he hoped the clarification would help reduce tensions and pledged to exercise greater care in his communication in future.

“I hope this clarification helps to reduce the tension. Going forward, I will choose my words with greater care so that my meaning is clear and does not cause unnecessary hurt,” he said.

The apology follows his earlier Facebook post, in which he referred to certain Kavango leaders as “useless” and made remarks about their time being numbered. The wording drew criticism because it was understood by many as a broader attack on the region’s traditional leadership.

In his latest statement, Kawaya reiterated that his criticism was aimed at specific individuals and apologised for the wider offence caused by his choice of words.
