Grave Theft Shocks Oshinyadhila

The Oshinyadhila community in the Oshana region has been left shocked after several tombstones were stolen from Omakakala Cemetery in recent weeks. Thieves are reportedly targeting granite and marble tombstones to resell or repurpose them as floor tiles and kitchen counters.

Families expressed deep anger and heartbreak, calling the acts not only criminal but also a violation of their loved ones’ memory. Maria Sheyanale, who found her mother’s grave vandalized, said the discovery reopened old wounds, describing it as “losing her all over again.”

Caretaker Julius Ipala said the vandalism was first noticed by a visitor and later confirmed by the police, with more than six graves affected. He also raised concerns about the lack of official cemetery guards.

Similar incidents have been reported in Oshakati, with some residents suspecting insiders within the funeral industry. Funeral home owner Kalimbo Iipumbu urged the government to tighten cemetery security, warning that such acts damage both community trust and the funeral industry’s reputation.

Some stolen tombstones are rumored to be used as household decorations or even as doormats. The community has since called on families to visit the cemetery and help repair damaged graves.
