New Namibian Banknotes and Coins Unveiled, Aligned with National Development Plan

New Namibian Banknotes and Coins Unveiled, Aligned with National Development Plan – The Updated World

In a landmark move since the introduction of the Namibian currency in 1993, President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah officially launched the upgraded series of banknotes and coins in Windhoek.

The unveiling of the new currency series marks a significant step toward modernizing Namibia’s monetary system and aligns with the objectives of the recently introduced Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6).

Speaking at the launch, President Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized that currency is more than a means of exchange—it reflects national identity and economic direction.

“The Namibia dollar is a vital national symbol. It enables trade, supports investment, and builds confidence among both local and international investors,” she said.

She noted that the improved banknotes and coins would be circulated alongside the existing ones for the time being, with the old currency to be gradually phased out over time.

Highlighting the broader impact of the currency, President Nandi-Ndaitwah said its stability plays a key role in ensuring ordinary Namibians have access to formal financial systems.

“A strong and stable currency fosters trust in our economy and in the government’s policy direction,” she added.

The upgraded currency features enhanced security elements and modern designs, reflecting Namibia’s economic evolution over the past three decades.

The Bank of Namibia is expected to roll out public awareness campaigns to help citizens familiarize themselves with the new currency features.
