According to a letter dated 18 July from Chief Regional Officer Mpenzeni Ntelamo to the council’s management committee, the suspicious transactions occurred on 27 June and involved the purchase of unidentified items by persons yet to be identified.
The alleged misuse took place during the four-month tenure of Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) councillor Florian Donatus as Chairperson of the Erongo Regional Council. Donatus assumed the position in March after SWAPO’s Arandis constituency councillor, Bernitha Imbamba, was removed through a vote of no confidence introduced by IPC councillor Deriou Benson.
However, on 1 August, the High Court nullified the no-confidence vote, reinstating Imbamba to her former position.
Imbamba has previously been vocal about alleged corruption within the council, raising concerns about governance and accountability.
Police say the case is under active investigation, and no arrests have been made at this stage.
