Cardoso Explains Shalulile Omission, But Supporters Unhappy

Peter Shalulile

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has explained his tactical decision to leave striker Peter Shalulile out of the starting lineup during the goalless draw against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

Addressing questions in the post-match press conference, Cardoso emphasized that Shalulile remains an important part of his squad, but his selection will depend on the team’s approach to specific matches.
“Peter will have the opportunity for sure. Depending on the type of game we are playing, Peter will definitely be used,” Cardoso said.

Shalulile’s absence was particularly notable as he is on the verge of making history. The Namibian international recently equaled Siyabonga Nomvethe’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) record of 129 goals and now requires just one more to become the outright all-time leading scorer.

Beyond his pursuit of the league milestone, Shalulile has also established a formidable record against Kaizer Chiefs, netting seven times against the Soweto giants, the highest tally by any player, eclipsing Raphael Chukwu’s previous mark of six.

However, not all supporters are convinced by Cardoso’s approach. Many Sundowns fans have voiced frustration over Shalulile’s limited role this season, arguing that a proven goal scorer of his calibre could have made the difference in matches the team has either drawn or lost. The striker, despite being one of the PSL’s most reliable finishers, has not started a single match so far this campaign.
