An 18-year-old boy is presumed to have drowned in the Kavango River on Sunday afternoon while swimming with friends in the Sauyemwa area of Rundu.
According to the police, the incident happened at around 16h00 when the teenager and a group of friends were swimming in the river. It is alleged that he got into difficulty, and despite his friends’ attempts to rescue him, they were unsuccessful. Witnesses say the current eventually pulled him under the water.
By late Sunday evening, the boy’s body had not yet been recovered. Search operations are expected to continue, while police have launched an investigation into the incident.
Authorities have once again urged members of the public, particularly young people, to exercise caution when swimming in the Kavango River, which is known for its strong currents and hidden dangers.
This is a developing story.
