SWAPO Secretary General Sophia Shaningwa has expressed deep sorrow following the death of Comrade Erkki Nghimtina, a veteran of Namibia’s National Liberation Struggle.

In a message shared on social media, Shaningwa described Nghimtina as a brave freedom fighter whose passing came as a shock to many. She said his death has left a profound sense of loss among his family, comrades, and the broader nation.

“I am saddened by the passing on of Comrade Erkki Nghimtina, a brave Veteran of the National Liberation Struggle of Namibia. Nothing would have prepared us for his untimely passing,” Shaningwa wrote.

She extended her heartfelt condolences to Nghimtina’s children, family members, friends, and fellow comrades, acknowledging the pain they are experiencing during this difficult period. Shaningwa emphasized Nghimtina’s contribution to the country’s independence, noting that he fought tirelessly for the freedom enjoyed by Namibians today.

Shaningwa further paid tribute to his legacy, describing him as “a brave son of the soil who fought relentlessly for the independence of our country,” and called on Namibians to take comfort in the role he played in shaping the nation’s history.

Comrade Erkki Nghimtina is remembered as part of the generation of freedom fighters whose sacrifices laid the foundation for an independent Namibia. Details regarding funeral arrangements have not yet been made public.
