Windhoek – Police were called to the Namibia Media Holdings (NMH) offices on Friday after activist Michael Amushelelo made an unannounced appearance during a disciplinary hearing involving a senior journalist.

Amushelelo, a well-known social activist and member of the Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF), was forcibly removed from the building after he attempted to show support for Namibian Sun reporter Jemima Beukes, who is facing disciplinary action.

The Namibia Media Professionals Union (Nampu) has urged NMH to ensure fair treatment for Beukes, with executive committee member Tileni Mongudhi calling for her to be treated with dignity. Beukes is reportedly being disciplined over allegations that her reporting on Namibia’s Green Hydrogen project was too negative.

Outside the NMH headquarters in Windhoek, a group of journalists and supporters held a silent protest, demanding justice for Beukes and calling for transparency in the proceedings. Amushelelo, who joined the demonstration, argued that Beukes was being denied the right to external representation during her hearing.

The situation highlights ongoing concerns about press freedom and media independence in Namibia, as journalists and activists continue to call for fair treatment in newsrooms.
