Botswana, Dangote Explore New Investment Opportunities
Botswana is exploring opportunities to attract large-scale investment and accelerate industrialisation following a courtesy call by Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote at the Office of the President.
Dangote, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Dangote Group, met with President Duma Boko, with discussions focusing on investment opportunities, industrial development and strengthening economic cooperation.
The engagement comes as African countries continue to seek ways to increase investment, expand local industries and reduce dependence on imported goods.
President Boko stressed the importance of Africa taking greater ownership of its economic development by moving beyond the export of raw materials and investing in local processing and manufacturing.
He said the continent has significant resources and opportunities, but greater emphasis must now be placed on implementation to transform those opportunities into tangible projects, industries and employment.
According to the President, Africa should focus on building productive economies that create value within the continent rather than continuing to export raw materials and import basic finished products.
The discussions with Dangote also highlighted the potential role of private-sector investment in supporting industrialisation and creating employment opportunities.
Dangote, whose business interests span several sectors across Africa, has established major investments in areas including cement, fertiliser, manufacturing and energy.
The meeting is expected to contribute to discussions around strengthening economic partnerships and identifying potential areas for investment between Botswana and Nigerian businesses.
President Boko reiterated the need for Africans to take the lead in driving the continent’s economic transformation.
“Africa must build Africa,” he said.
