Namibia Surpasses Global HIV Targets, Records Impressive 97-98-98 Achievement
Namibia has strengthened its position as a global leader in the HIV response after new data showed the country surpassed the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets, recording an impressive 97-98-98 treatment cascade.
The achievement places Namibia among a small group of countries worldwide that have exceeded the international HIV testing and treatment benchmarks.
The latest figures show that 97% of people living with HIV in Namibia know their status, 98% of those diagnosed are receiving treatment, while 98% of people on treatment have achieved viral suppression.
Health Minister Dr Esperance Luvindao welcomed the achievement but cautioned against becoming complacent, stressing that Namibia must continue intensifying efforts to prevent new HIV infections.
“We celebrate this achievement with pride, but not complacency. Our work continues more diligently than ever before,” Luvindao said.
She noted that the targets mainly measure progress among people who have already contracted HIV, meaning prevention remains a critical part of the country’s response.
According to the minister, the rate of new HIV infections remains concerning and requires continued attention to ensure Namibia does not lose momentum in its fight against the epidemic.
The achievement reflects years of work involving healthcare professionals, community health workers, development partners, civil society organisations and communities across the country. It also recognises the role of Namibians who have undergone HIV testing, started treatment and remained committed to their treatment programmes.
Namibia’s progress represents a major transformation for a country that was once among those hardest hit by the HIV epidemic. The latest results demonstrate what sustained government leadership, community participation and investment in healthcare can achieve.
Despite the milestone, authorities face the ongoing challenge of maintaining high treatment and viral suppression rates while reducing the number of new infections.
Namibia’s next priority will therefore be to protect the gains already achieved, expand HIV prevention efforts and ensure that no communities or vulnerable groups are left behind in the national HIV response.
