Michael Amushelelo to Stay in Jail Until Wednesday After Court Appearance

Michael Amushelelo

Activist Michael Amushelelo has been ordered to stay at the Windhoek Correctional Facility until Wednesday this week. The decision was made by High Court Judge Anne-Doris Hans-Kaumbi after a court case involving contempt of court.

Amushelelo went to court after an urgent application was made against him. He is being sued for N$1 million because of comments he made, which the court believes disrespected the legal system. He did not have a lawyer and said he needed N$100,000 to pay for legal help. So far, he has only managed to raise N$32,000 from his followers on social media.

In court, Amushelelo made strong statements, saying that judges are “puppets” and that they think they are “little gods” because of their job titles. Judge Hans-Kaumbi said these words were disrespectful and showed contempt for the court.

Amushelelo also asked the judge to remove herself from the case, claiming bias. But the judge said he did not give enough proof and decided not to step down. However, she said the main case would be given to another judge for further handling.

He is expected to return to court on Wednesday, where he must explain why he should not be punished for contempt of court based on what happened in court today.
