17 Killed and 15 Injured in Gauteng Tavern Shooting
A manhunt is underway in South Africa’s Gauteng province after a shooting at a tavern in Wedela left 17 people dead and 15 others injured.
The incident happened at about 9:30pm on Saturday night in Extension 3, Wedela, southwest of Johannesburg.
According to police, a group of eight unidentified suspects arrived at the tavern and opened fire on people who were outside. They then went inside the establishment and continued shooting at patrons.
The suspects are believed to have been carrying AK-47 rifles and pistols. Police said some patrons were allegedly searched and had their mobile phones taken before the attackers escaped in two unidentified vehicles.
Two vehicles were also reportedly set alight during the incident.
Emergency medical personnel declared all 17 victims dead at the scene. The deceased included 13 men and four women, while another 15 people suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to medical facilities for treatment.
Police have not yet established the motive behind the attack, and no arrests had been reported when the latest information was released.
Gauteng police have deployed detectives and specialised units to track down those responsible. The investigation includes 17 murder cases, 15 attempted murder cases and two cases of malicious damage to property.
The investigation remains ongoing as police continue searching for the eight suspects.
