Zambian politician Joseph Kalimbwe has described Southern Africa as one of the continent’s most stable regions to live in, urging citizens to appreciate the region’s relative political stability and economic ties while acknowledging its own challenges.

Kalimbwe made the remarks in a message addressed to Zambians and other Southern Africans, encouraging them to travel across the continent to gain a broader understanding of the conditions faced by people in different countries.

“Zambians, and everyone living in any Southern African Country, let nobody lie to you, until you travel Africa, visit 5, 7, 10 African countries, step into a French speaking African country, you will realise that this – SADC – is the best and most stable place to ever live in in Africa,” he said.

He acknowledged that Southern African countries face their own difficulties but argued that people may take certain advantages for granted until they experience life elsewhere.

“We have our problems and its normal. But you will never realise how fortunate we are in this part of Africa until you step out of your home country. We share so much similaries in SADC economies,” he added.

Togo, meanwhile, has been governed by the Gnassingbé family since 1967. Faure Gnassingbé assumed power in 2005 following the death of his father, Gnassingbé Eyadéma, who had ruled the country for nearly four decades.

Kalimbwe argued that citizens should recognise the relative advantages of their region without using them as an excuse for poor governance or slow development.

“While its not an excuse not to do more,” he said, stressing that Southern Africans should continue working to improve conditions in their own countries.

He added: “Zambians and others, lets keep our region safe comrades. We have our issues but our Southern African Economy is something we must guard safely.”

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has 16 member states: Angola, Botswana, Comoros, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The organisation promotes regional integration, economic development, peace and security.

However, the inclusion of Madagascar in SADC is significant. The country experienced a military takeover in 2025.

His message nevertheless highlights the importance of regional stability and the need for African governments to strengthen democratic institutions, improve public services and create better economic opportunities for their citizens.
