Pastor Collapses and Dies While Preaching About Death
A funeral ceremony in Aleto, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria, turned tragic on Friday, October 2, after RCCG Resident Pastor Deacon Steve Eyo collapsed while delivering a sermon and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Eyo, who served as the Resident Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Aleto, was officiating at the funeral when he began preaching on the topic, “The Certainty of Death and Hope Beyond.”
More than 300 mourners were reportedly present as the pastor spoke about the inevitability of death and the fact that nobody knows when their time will come.
According to eyewitness accounts, Eyo used the example of going to a market to explain the different times at which people leave this world. He reportedly told mourners that, just as some people leave the market early while others remain until later, people also die at different stages of life.
He further warned that death can come unexpectedly and encouraged those present to live with an awareness of the uncertainty of life.
The sermon began at about 1:10 p.m. and, roughly 15 minutes later, the atmosphere changed dramatically.
At around 1:25 p.m., while the pastor was concluding his message, he suddenly collapsed, causing his microphone to fall to the ground.
Because he had been speaking extensively about death and how suddenly it can occur, some people initially believed the collapse was part of his illustration. However, it soon became clear that he was experiencing a medical emergency.
Church ministers, choir members and people with medical knowledge rushed to assist him. First aid was administered while others prayed for the pastor.
When his condition did not improve, Eyo was taken to a nearby hospital in the same ambulance that had been arranged to transport the remains of the person whose funeral was being held.
Medical personnel at the hospital later confirmed that the pastor had died. His remains were subsequently taken to a mortuary.
The exact medical cause of his sudden collapse and death has not been publicly disclosed.
The incident has left members of the RCCG community and residents of Aleto shocked, as the pastor died while delivering a message centred on the certainty and unpredictability of death.
