Two Namibian men appeared in the Ngoma Periodical Court on Tuesday in connection with a copper theft incident that caused significant damage to a sub-power kiosk in Bukalo.
Siyanga Muchila (36) and Ntuka Lilato (28) are facing two criminal charges: theft of copper wire and malicious damage to property. The duo was arrested on Monday night while allegedly trying to excavate underground copper wiring in the Bukalo area.
According to police, the suspects’ actions led to the cutting of key electric cables, disrupting infrastructure and resulting in extensive damage to a sub-power kiosk that serves the local community.
Chief Inspector Kisco Sitali, the Police Community Liaison Officer, confirmed that the suspects had been under surveillance following multiple reports from concerned residents.
“These individuals have long been persons of interest,” said Sitali. “They are not from Bukalo, but have been commuting from places such as Katima Mulilo to target copper cables. Thanks to intelligence gathered from community members and our own informants, we were able to monitor their movements. A recent tip-off enabled us to apprehend them while in the act.”
Sitali also acknowledged the role of the Bukalo Village Council in combating such criminal activities. “The recent efforts to clear overgrown bush in the area have significantly helped police visibility and community safety,” he added.
The case has been postponed for further investigation, and the accused remain in custody. Authorities continue to warn the public about the dangers and legal consequences of tampering with public utilities.
