Concerns over homelessness in Walvis Bay have deepened after reports revealed that cemeteries are now being used as shelter.
Landless People’s Movement councillor Ryan Gordon recently discovered several people living at the Narraville graveyard, including a young mother who was later hospitalised after an assault.
Gordon said at least eight people are staying at the Narraville cemetery, three at Kuisebmond, and others in bushes near Lover’s Hill. He warned that homelessness in the town reflects a wider problem, with more than 50,000 residents living in shacks or rented rooms and a housing backlog of 36,000 units.
Residents have also linked the rise in crime and drug abuse to the growing number of people without homes. Gordon stressed the need for emergency shelters, stronger social services, and faster housing solutions to address what he called a long-standing systemic problem.
