Botswana has released a limited-edition P50 banknote celebrating world-renowned sprinter Letsile Tebogo, marking the first time an athlete has been featured on the country’s currency.
The new note was unveiled on Friday in Gaborone during a ceremony led by President Duma Boko and Bank of Botswana Governor Cornelius Dekop. Previous designs of the P50 displayed images of Botswana’s founding president, Sir Seretse Khama, and the Okavango Delta.
Highlighting the occasion on social media, the Botswana presidency stated:
“50 YEARS GOLDEN JUBILEE
The Bank of Botswana marked its Golden Jubilee with a historic surprise, unveiling a newly designed P50 banknote featuring the image of Botswana’s Olympic gold medalist, Letsile Tebogo. The commemorative note not only celebrates the central bank’s 50 years of service but also honors a national icon whose achievement has brought pride and inspiration to the nation.
NB: The new P50 banknote will circulate alongside the existing one and is released as a limited edition.”

Tebogo’s exceptional achievements have made him one of Botswana’s most recognised sporting figures. Officials say the new note reflects both national pride and the country’s commitment to celebrating outstanding talent.
