Police in the Kavango East Region are investigating a disturbing incident involving a minor after a 15-year-old learner was hospitalised following an alleged birth at Ngone Combined School.

The Grade 9 learner was admitted to Rundu State Hospital after reportedly giving birth in a school toilet during class hours on Friday, 30 January 2026. The newborn baby boy was allegedly dumped into a pit latrine shortly after the birth.

Kavango East Crime Investigations Coordinator, Commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu, said the learner had earlier complained of abdominal pain before asking three other learners to escort her to the school toilets.

According to statements obtained by police, the girl entered the toilet alone and later called out for help. Two Grade 7 learners and one Grade 9 learner, all from Ngone Tar Road, responded and were allegedly informed that she had just given birth, with the umbilical cord still attached.

It is further alleged that the umbilical cord was cut using a broken bottle by one of the learners before the newborn was disposed of in the pit latrine.

The learner reportedly suffered severe blood loss and remains in hospital under police supervision. Commissioner Kanyetu confirmed that no criminal case has been opened at this stage, and investigations are continuing.
