An alleged former member of the 28s gang on Tuesday denied claims that he once held the rank of general, instead confirming to the court that he served as an inspector during his time in the gang.

Steven Schneider (33), who testified in support of his girlfriend and co-accused Naomi Fisch, told the court that his involvement with the 28s gang lasted for eight years. He described the group as one primarily driven by financial gain and insisted that his association with the gang has since ended.

Schneider said he formally left the 28s gang while serving a sentence at the Windhoek Correctional Facility, adding that he has since attempted to change his lifestyle and distance himself from criminal activities.

The accused further informed the court that he has been in and out of prison since the age of 17, a history the State argued raises serious concerns about his credibility and reliability as a witness.

State prosecutor Frank Tjibeba submitted that Schneider’s criminal background and previous gang affiliation undermine the court’s confidence in his evidence, despite him having testified under oath. The State further linked these concerns to the serious charges faced by Schneider and his co-accused.

Schneider also addressed the discovery of a large sum of money at the house he shares with Fisch, stating that although cash was found, he did not know the exact amount and never counted it. He maintained that the money was not connected to gang activities.

He confirmed that he has a pending indecent assault case before the Rehoboth Magistrate’s Court.
