A Brazilian woman who worked as a translator for Cape Verde’s national football team during this year’s FIFA Series in New Zealand has alleged that she was sexually assaulted by the team’s captain, Ryan Mendes, according to multiple media reports.

The woman was hired to provide translation and operational support for Cape Verde during the international tournament held in Auckland in March. She claims the alleged incident occurred after the team’s friendly match against Chile.

According to her statement to New Zealand police, she was invited to what she believed was a work-related meeting at the team hotel. However, after discovering it was a social gathering rather than an official assignment, she returned to her hotel room.

She alleges that shortly afterwards, Ryan Mendes knocked on her door, forced his way into the room, physically assaulted her, and raped her. The woman reportedly sustained injuries and later handed photographs, medical records and other evidence to investigators.

Reports indicate that she also informed officials linked to the Cape Verde delegation about the alleged incident but says she received no assistance.

New Zealand Police have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing. Authorities have reportedly collected hotel security footage and forensic evidence as part of the inquiry. No criminal charges have been announced at this stage.

Cape Verde qualify for round of 32 and set to face Argentina on 4 July 2026.

FIFA has acknowledged the reports and stated that it is in contact with New Zealand authorities, adding that it treats allegations of misconduct with the utmost seriousness. Ryan Mendes has not publicly responded to the allegations.

The investigation continues, and no findings have yet been made regarding the claims.
