Correctional Officer Allegedly Commits Suicide at Omaruru Prison

Authorities are investigating the death of a correctional officer who was fatally wounded by a gunshot inside the Omaruru Correctional Facility on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Johannes Petrus Rooy, an employee of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security. According to preliminary information, Rooy had reported for duty at around 14:00 on 3 January 2026 and was officially issued with a service firearm in line with established operational procedures.
Less than two hours later, at approximately 15:24, Rooy was discovered with a serious gunshot injury within the facility. Immediate assistance was rendered, but he later died as a result of the wound.
Police confirmed that no suicide note was found at the scene. The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting have not yet been determined, and a full investigation has been launched to establish how the incident occurred. Authorities have indicated that further details will be released once investigations are concluded.
