A 24-year-old woman has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after the Keetmanshoop Regional Court found her responsible for the brutal killing of a nineteen-month-old baby.

Regional Magistrate Frans Anderson on Monday imposed an effective 10-year jail sentence on Flora Van Kent after convicting her of murder. The court ordered a 15-year sentence, with five years suspended, stressing the need for punishment that reflects the seriousness of the crime and deters similar acts in the future.

While delivering judgment, Magistrate Anderson strongly condemned the manner in which the infant was killed, describing it as cruel and deeply disturbing. He said the case highlighted the extreme levels of inhumanity that can surface when personal emotions are allowed to spiral out of control. The magistrate also pointed out that throughout the proceedings, Van Kent showed no visible remorse, instead maintaining what he described as a cold and calculated demeanor.

Evidence before the court revealed that Van Kent, a mother of two, stabbed the baby girl twice while the child was asleep at her mother’s home. The injuries proved fatal.

The court heard that the attack was motivated by jealousy. Van Kent allegedly acted after learning that her former boyfriend who is also the child’s father had rekindled his relationship with the baby’s mother.

Van Kent pleaded guilty to the murder charge at the commencement of the trial.

During sentencing submissions, the state argued for a harsher penalty, calling for an 18-year prison sentence with three years suspended. The defence, represented by Legal Aid, proposed a 15-year term with part of the sentence suspended.

In weighing both arguments, the court ruled that the imposed sentence was appropriate to reflect society’s outrage, serve as punishment, and discourage similar crimes, particularly those committed against vulnerable children.
