Mother dies in fire but manages to save her children

A mother managed to get her two young children to safety before she was trapped and killed in a house fire at Shackdweller Location in Katima Mulilo early Monday morning.
The woman, identified by police as 42-year-old Nsala Fiona Mwazi, was asleep with her children when the fire broke out at about midnight.
In a desperate attempt to save the children, Mwazi pushed them through a burglar-barred window and called for help. The children escaped, but Mwazi was unable to get out of the room and died in the fire.
Police said Mwazi was occupying one of the rooms in a two-bedroom house shared with another female tenant.
Investigators are now examining the circumstances surrounding the blaze after a five-litre container with a strong smell of petrol was discovered near the entrance to Mwazi’s room. The container is being treated as a possible clue to the origin of the fire.
One person has been taken in for questioning as police continue their investigation.
The property has been secured and the scene remains closed while a forensic team from Windhoek is expected to conduct a detailed examination.
Mwazi’s next of kin have been informed of her death.
