NamPol Traffic Officer Released on Bail Following DUI Allegations

A Namibian Police traffic officer accused of driving under the influence has been granted bail following his appearance in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate’s Court.
Sergeant Himeezembi Kariko (31), who serves in the Otjiwarongo Traffic Unit, appeared in court in connection with an incident that took place on 26 December. It is alleged that he was driving a police vehicle when he lost control and crashed into a boundary wall along Dr Libertine Amadhila Street, causing minor damage to a parked vehicle.
Court documents indicate that Kariko’s blood alcohol level was recorded at 1.08%, significantly above the legal limit.

While granting bail, Magistrate Jianni Beukes remarked that the accused, as a sworn law enforcement officer, was expected to uphold the law at all times. The magistrate described the alleged conduct as a serious lapse in judgment and a breach of public trust.
Bail was initially set at N$8,000 but was reduced to N$4,000 after the accused informed the court that he could not afford the higher amount.
Kariko faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless or negligent driving. The case has been postponed to March for further court proceedings.
