Online scam costs Windhoek pensioner nearly N$31,000

An elderly resident of Windhoek has been left out of pocket after falling prey to a scammer who used a fake municipal warning to extort money.
The case was reported on Saturday, 24 January 2026, after the 75-year-old woman was allegedly contacted by an unknown individual claiming to represent the City of Windhoek. The suspect allegedly informed her that her municipal services were about to be cut off and demanded an urgent payment.

Fearing disconnection, the victim followed the instructions and transferred a total of N$30,990.60.
Police say no suspects have been arrested, and the money has not been recovered. Investigations into the online fraud case are still underway.
