Police Arrest Malawian Doctor Linked to N$1.9 Million Insurance Fraud

A 48-year-old doctor has been arrested in connection with a N$1.9 million fraud case after police confirmed that false medical documents were allegedly used to defraud an insurance company.
The suspect was arrested on Saturday at the Muhembo border post in the Kavango East Region while trying to leave the country. Oshana regional police commissioner Naftal Sakaria confirmed the arrest on Sunday and said the suspect, a Malawian national, is expected to appear in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court.
According to police information, the doctor works at Onandjokwe State Hospital and is suspected to be involved in fraudulent insurance claims made to Sanlam amounting to about N$1.9 million. Investigations indicate that fake medical reports and supporting documents from different doctors in northern Namibia were allegedly used to obtain money from the insurance company.
During earlier court proceedings in January, chief inspector Antonious Gabriel told the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court that about N$1.2 million had already been claimed by a suspect linked to former police officer turned gang leader Abner Matheus.
Police sources also said the doctor was arrested while travelling through the Muhembo border post on his way to Botswana, where he was reportedly going to attend a party.
Authorities say investigations are continuing and more people could be arrested as the case develops.
