Rundu Police Cells Turn Violent as Inmate Attacks Leave Five Injured

Chaos broke out at the Rundu Police Station last week after a series of violent attacks inside the police holding cells left five inmates injured.
Kavango East Regional Commander, Commissioner Andreas Haingura, confirmed that the incidents happened on Thursday morning, 22 January 2026, around 09h30.
One of the inmates, identified as Karora Ndjamba, who is facing about 16 pending criminal cases, allegedly attacked two fellow detainees. Police say he used a sharp piece of metal broken from the cell’s burglar door to stab them.
During the struggle, one of the injured inmates reportedly managed to overpower Ndjamba, take the metal object, and stab him near his left shoulder. All three were rushed to hospital for treatment.
After receiving medical care, Ndjamba was returned to the police station. According to Haingura, he demanded to be taken back into the holding cells. However, when officers opened the cell door, another violent incident allegedly followed.
Ndjamba is accused of attacking three more inmates, this time using an Okapi knife, with help from another detainee. The three victims suffered stab wounds, with one sustaining a serious deep cut to his left arm. They were again taken to hospital for treatment.
Ndjamba appeared in court on Monday and was formally charged in connection with the stabbings. Due to the seriousness of the matter, he was later transferred to Ndiyona Police Station.
Police investigations into both incidents are continuing.
