Rundu Police Officers Arrested for Alleged Smuggling in Holding Cells

A joint intelligence effort between vigilant members of the public and law enforcement authorities has led to the arrest of two police officers stationed at the Rundu Police Station, who are allegedly linked to attempts to smuggle prohibited items into police holding cells.
The arrests were carried out on separate days, Tuesday and Wednesday, following tip-offs from community members who raised concerns over suspicious conduct involving detainees. Acting swiftly on the information, police authorities initiated internal investigations that resulted in the apprehension of the two officers.
Kavango East Regional Police Commander, Commissioner Andreas Haingura, confirmed the incident and reiterated that the Namibian Police Force remains committed to maintaining discipline, professionalism and integrity within its ranks. He stressed that officers found engaging in criminal activities will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
Police investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly attempted to smuggle various prohibited items into the holding cells, including cannabis, cellphones, cigarettes and SIM cards. Such items are strictly forbidden within detention facilities, as they pose serious security risks and can interfere with ongoing investigations and the administration of justice.
Meanwhile, concerned members of the public have called on Inspector-General of the Namibian Police Force, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo, to act on his earlier commitment to reshuffle officers, particularly those perceived to have developed overly familiar relationships with suspects. Community members argue that such familiarity compromises professionalism and creates opportunities for misconduct within police stations.
Commissioner Haingura acknowledged the role played by the public in exposing the alleged wrongdoing and encouraged continued cooperation between communities and the police. He noted that public vigilance remains a key pillar in the fight against corruption and criminal activities within law enforcement structures.
The two officers are expected to face both criminal charges and internal disciplinary proceedings as investigations continue. Police management has assured the public that decisive action will be taken to restore confidence in the police service and ensure that detention facilities remain secure and professionally managed.
