Security guard dies after alleged self-inflicted shooting in Grootfontein
Police in Grootfontein are investigating the death of a 34-year-old security guard who allegedly shot himself with a work-issued shotgun on Saturday evening.
The incident was reported at about 21:00 at Erf No. 943 in the Omulunga area of Soweto, Grootfontein. Police said the man was inside his room when he allegedly sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach.
He was immediately taken to Grootfontein State Hospital for medical treatment. However, his injuries proved fatal and he later died at the hospital.
Otjozondjupa Police Regional Spokesperson Senior Inspector Maureen Mbeha confirmed the incident, saying the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
The deceased was employed as a security guard at Nawa 24 Shopping in Grootfontein.
Police have not yet established what may have led to the incident, and the motive remains unknown.
Mbeha also indicated that the deceased’s next of kin had not yet been informed at the time of reporting.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are continuing.
