Police in Swakopmund have issued a stern warning against insurance fraud following the arrest of a 23-year-old Namibian man who is accused of deliberately misleading authorities through a sworn statement.

The suspect was taken into custody on Saturday afternoon at the Mondesa Police Station after investigators established that a reported housebreaking had not occurred. He had earlier claimed, under oath, that unknown suspects broke into his home and stole various household items, including a refrigerator, stove, laptop and microwave.

However, police investigations revealed no signs of forced entry at the residence. Further checks led officers to recover some of the allegedly stolen items from a room belonging to the suspect’s aunt, casting doubt on his claims.

It is alleged that the false statement was made in an attempt to support an insurance claim amounting to N$18,300 with Home Corp. The man is now facing charges under the Commissioner of Oaths Act, alternatively perjury.

He is expected to appear before the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court on 18 December 2025. Authorities have once again cautioned members of the public that making false reports and attempting to defraud insurance companies is a criminal offence that will be met with arrest and prosecution.
