Tourists lose N$65,000 in Walvis Bay vehicle break-in

Two vehicle break-ins reported in Walvis Bay and Windhoek over the weekend resulted in the theft of valuables worth a combined N$89,800, according to the police.
The incidents have raised concerns about vehicle security, particularly in areas visited by tourists and shoppers.
The first case was reported at Dunes Mall in Walvis Bay on Friday afternoon, where unknown suspects allegedly broke into a tourist’s vehicle and stole belongings valued at N$65,000.
A second incident occurred at Hidas Centre in Klein Windhoek between 23:00 on Friday and 01:00 on Saturday. Police said the suspects used an unknown object to gain access to a parked vehicle before making off with items worth N$24,800.
No arrests have been reported in connection with either case, and the stolen property has not been recovered.
Vehicle break-ins involving tourists can also affect Namibia’s reputation as a safe destination for visitors, making security in public parking areas an important concern.
Police have repeatedly urged motorists to avoid leaving valuables inside parked vehicles, even when stepping away for a short time. Items left in plain sight can attract criminals looking for easy opportunities to break into vehicles.
Motorists are therefore advised to keep valuables out of view and ensure their vehicles are properly secured when parking in public places.
