Truck Driver Refuses Breathalyser Test, Faces Multiple Charges

Traffic came to a standstill in Orwetoveni, Otjiwarongo, after a truck driver brought his vehicle to a halt in the middle of the road near the municipality offices and refused to cooperate with traffic officials.
The situation unfolded when the driver declined to take a breathalyser test and then attempted to flee towards the informal settlement area. Police later managed to stop the truck in the Orwetoveni location, where it remained parked across the roadway.
Eyewitnesses said a traffic officer tried to communicate with the driver through the window, but the officer was shoved aside when the driver briefly opened the door before slamming it shut. The driver then locked himself inside the truck and refused to come out.
As a result, the road was blocked for several hours, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes. Police officers remained on the scene, repeatedly calling on the driver to cooperate and remove the truck from the road.
After all attempts failed, officers contacted the owner of the vehicle, who gave permission for the police to break one of the side windows. Tear gas was then released into the truck, prompting the driver to exit after experiencing breathing difficulties.
Police confirmed that the driver will be charged with refusing to follow lawful instructions, obstructing traffic, and other related offences. He is expected to appear before the Otjiwarongo Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
