WhatsApp community group alerts played a crucial role on Tuesday afternoon when a 76-year-old Pioneers Park resident managed to call for help during an attempted robbery at her home in Windhoek.

Police reports indicate that the elderly woman had been preparing to leave her house when a male suspect allegedly entered her yard, threatened her with a knife and tied her legs before moving into the house to steal several items, including her house keys.

Despite the frightening situation, the pensioner managed to free herself and sent a message to her neighbourhood WhatsApp group, prompting an immediate response from nearby residents.

One neighbour rushed to her home and found the suspect still on the property. According to the police, the suspect attempted to attack him, leading the neighbour to draw his firearm and shoot the intruder in the leg.
