Israel Introduces Death Penalty for Certain Crimes

Israel’s parliament has approved a highly controversial law introducing the death penalty for certain deadly attacks, a move that has sparked intense debate both domestically and internationally.
The legislation mandates that individuals found guilty of deliberately killing civilians or soldiers face execution unless exceptional circumstances justify a lesser sentence. While the law technically allows Israeli civilian courts to apply the death penalty, in practice it will predominantly affect Palestinians tried in military courts in the occupied West Bank.
The bill passed with a vote of 62 to 48. Supporters argue that the measure is a necessary deterrent against lethal attacks and a firm response to ongoing security threats. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly backed the law, saying it sends a clear message that deliberate killings will be met with the most severe consequences.
Opponents have sharply criticized the law, calling it discriminatory and warning that it undermines basic principles of justice. Legal experts and human rights organizations have raised concerns that the legislation could violate international norms, as it primarily targets one group while leaving others largely unaffected. Several petitions challenging the law are expected to be filed in Israel’s Supreme Court.
