Sierra Leone Launches First Privacy and Personal Data Protection Advocacy Toolkit

Sierra Leone has strengthened its efforts to protect citizens’ privacy and personal information through the development of the country’s first Advocacy Toolkit on Privacy and Personal Data Protection.

The toolkit was developed through a partnership involving U.S. Fulbright Specialist Dylan Presman and the Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI), bringing together legal experts, journalists, government institutions and technology stakeholders.

The initiative seeks to provide citizens and institutions with practical guidance on privacy rights, personal data protection and the responsible handling and use of personal information.

Presman’s engagement under the U.S. Fulbright Specialist Program focused on strengthening knowledge and capacity around cybersecurity and data protection, areas that have become increasingly important as governments, businesses and citizens rely more heavily on digital technologies.

The Advocacy Toolkit is expected to serve as a practical resource for raising public awareness about privacy and helping institutions better understand their responsibilities when collecting, processing, storing and sharing personal data.

The initiative also highlights the connection between data protection and individual freedom, particularly in an increasingly digital society where personal information is routinely collected and processed by public and private institutions.

The collaboration reflects continued U.S. support for knowledge-sharing and capacity-building initiatives aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, human rights and the rule of law in Sierra Leone.

Through partnerships between international specialists and local institutions, the initiative seeks to equip stakeholders with the knowledge needed to promote responsible data practices while protecting citizens’ fundamental privacy rights.

The launch of the toolkit marks another step in Sierra Leone’s efforts to strengthen its data protection and cybersecurity landscape and ensure that technological development is accompanied by safeguards for individual rights and freedoms.
