US Senators Introduce Bill to Block Trump from Seizing Greenland

Two U.S. senators from different political parties have introduced a new bill to prevent the United States from taking control of lands belonging to NATO allies without permission. Democrat Jeanne Shaheen and Republican Lisa Murkowski said the legislation responds to growing concern over former President Donald Trump’s repeated remarks suggesting that Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, should come under U.S. control even by force if necessary.
The proposed law, called the NATO Unity Protection Act, would stop federal funds from being used to occupy, annex, or interfere with the territories of NATO member countries without their agreement. It would apply to both the Department of Defense and the State Department, ensuring that U.S. resources are not used against allies.
Senator Shaheen, from New Hampshire, said the bill sends a strong message that American taxpayer money should not be spent on actions that could harm NATO, the military alliance that has supported global security for over 70 years. “Any suggestion that the United States might act against an ally threatens our national security and weakens international partnerships,” Shaheen said.
Senator Murkowski, representing Alaska, added that NATO remains the “strongest shield” for the United States and global peace. She said the idea of using American power against allied nations is “deeply concerning” and must be clearly rejected by Congress in law.
The bill does not specifically name Greenland, but it comes in response to Trump’s repeated statements about acquiring the Arctic island. Trump argued that control over Greenland would strengthen U.S. security, citing concerns that other countries might gain influence in the region. Denmark and Greenland’s government have firmly rejected these ideas.
Supporters of the legislation say it protects international law, national sovereignty, and the credibility of NATO. They warn that ignoring these principles could weaken alliances, encourage rival nations, and ultimately put the United States at risk.
The bipartisan effort shows that despite political differences, many U.S. lawmakers remain committed to upholding the sovereignty of allied nations and maintaining strong international partnerships.
