Communities in Kavango Plead for Government Intervention as Crocodile Attacks Increase

Communities living along the Kavango River say they are living in constant fear, as crocodile attacks continue to claim lives almost every month. For many households, especially those unable to afford piped water, the river remains their only source for drinking, bathing and fishing, putting them at daily risk.
Residents of Kamutjonga village in the Mukwe Constituency gathered today to peacefully protest and demand urgent government intervention to protect those who depend on the river for survival. They stressed that while the river sustains their livelihood, it has become increasingly dangerous, with frequent reports of injuries and deaths due to crocodile attacks.
During the demonstration, villagers called on the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism to introduce stronger safety measures, deploy a dedicated emergency response unit, and fast-track compensation for affected families. They further appealed for community education programmes on wildlife safety.
Mukwe Constituency Councillor Damian Maghambayi supported the petition and expressed concern over the high number of young victims.
He criticised delayed assistance and insufficient awareness campaigns on wildlife risks.
Maghambayi confirmed that the petition will be delivered to the ministry and pledged to push for urgent intervention to protect vulnerable communities along the river.
