Government Issues Nationwide Precautionary Alert Ahead of Expected Heavy Rainfall

The Office of the Prime Minister has called on regional authorities and the public to brace for a potentially hazardous rainy season, following meteorological forecasts indicating above-normal rainfall across Namibia during the 2025/2026 period. The warning comes amid heightened concerns over the likelihood of flash floods and other weather-related risks.
According to Amb. Emilia Nkusa, Secretary to the Cabinet, the upcoming rainy season is expected to be marked by intense downpours, strong winds, and frequent lightning. She stressed that such conditions could pose serious threats to human life, livestock, vital infrastructure, and farmlands, particularly in regions historically affected by seasonal flooding.
In a formal advisory issued on 09 December 2025 to all Regional Disaster Risk Management Committees (RDRMCs), Amb. Nkusa urged regional leadership to activate emergency preparedness plans without delay. This includes identifying and relocating households living in flood-prone zones, strengthening community awareness campaigns, and ensuring that emergency response teams are on standby.
She further emphasized the importance of timely information-sharing, directing all regions to make full use of local communication channels—such as community radio, village leadership structures, and digital platforms—to circulate early-warning alerts and safety guidance.
The Office of the Prime Minister noted that proactive preparation remains the most effective tool in minimizing the impact of severe weather events. With rains expected to intensify in the coming weeks, authorities have encouraged communities to remain vigilant, report early signs of flooding, and follow official instructions to reduce the risk of loss and damage.
As Namibia prepares for what could be one of the wetter seasons in recent years, disaster management teams across the country are expected to enhance coordination efforts, assess vulnerable areas, and mobilize resources to ensure rapid response when needed.
