For decades, residents of Kashandja village in Ndonga Linena Constituency have faced the daily struggle of traveling long distances to access safe drinking water. Many villagers were forced to walk up to five kilometers to the nearest neighboring village to fetch water, a task that often consumed hours of their day.

This longstanding challenge has now come to an end, as the Department of Rural Water Supply in the Kavango East Region recently completed the construction of a new borehole in the village. The project, which was implemented last year, now provides reliable access to potable water for approximately 20 households, bringing much-needed relief to the community.

Seventeen-year-old Poroto Shitunda shared his personal experience with the KAVANGO EAST MICT media team, describing a lifetime of walking long distances to collect water. “All my life, I had to travel to the nearby village just to get drinking water. I am very happy that this is no longer the case,” he said.

Community members have expressed gratitude for the intervention, highlighting how access to clean water will improve daily life, reduce health risks, and allow children to spend more time in school rather than fetching water.

Belinda Kulatau, reporting for KAVANGO EAST MICT, noted that the initiative is part of the regional government’s ongoing efforts to ensure rural communities have sustainable access to clean water, a critical resource for health, education, and economic development.
