A major relocation exercise is set to begin as government has instructed the Ovaherero community repatriated from Botswana last year to move from their temporary settlement to Otjipaheua, a new area situated about 150 kilometres from Gam.

Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform Minister Inge Zaamwani announced that relocation preparations are already underway. She confirmed that each family will receive a plot allocation letter before Christmas, after which they will be required to settle on their designated plots within 30 days.

To support long-term resettlement, government has also purchased six farms for eligible members of the group. These farms will be subdivided into units to accommodate beneficiaries.

Zaamwani revealed that more than N$115 million has already been invested in developing the temporary site currently hosting the community. However, she stressed that the area was never intended to be permanent, highlighting the urgency to complete the reintegration process.

She appealed for unity and cooperation from community members and all stakeholders as the move to Otjipaheua proceeds, assuring that government will cover the full cost of the relocation.

She also confirm that three members of the community who were part of the group resettled at Gam have passed away.
