Prime Minister Dr. Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare has challenged Namibia’s Executive Directors to transform the Public Service by prioritising the needs of citizens, improving cooperation between government institutions and ensuring that policies are translated into meaningful action.

Speaking at the opening of the Executive Directors’ Strategic Governance and Policy Execution Retreat in Swakopmund, Ngurare said public servants must move away from bureaucratic barriers and embrace a culture focused on delivering measurable results for the people of Namibia.

The retreat has brought together Executive Directors and senior government officials to discuss ways of strengthening policy implementation, enhancing service delivery, improving accountability and transparency, and promoting better coordination across the Public Service.

Ngurare reminded senior administrators that leadership in government comes with a responsibility to serve the nation rather than occupy positions of authority.

“Today we are here, tomorrow others will be here, just as there were others before us. Public office is public office,” he said.

He further urged government institutions to align their strategic and procurement plans with national priorities, accelerate the implementation of capital projects and adopt a service-oriented approach that responds to the basic needs of citizens.

The Prime Minister cautioned that government leaders must ensure their commitments are reflected in tangible outcomes, saying that failing to act on promises amounts to failing the people they are entrusted to serve. He also called on ministries and public institutions to strengthen collaboration instead of operating independently.

The retreat also heard remarks from Secretary to Cabinet Ambassador Emilia Mkusa and Public Service Commission Chairperson Ambassador Patrick Nandago, who joined discussions aimed at improving governance and the effective execution of government policies.
