PM Outlines Key Priorities For Fisheries Reform
Prime Minister Dr Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare has outlined key priorities for reforming Namibia’s fisheries sector, stressing the need to protect marine resources while ensuring greater economic and social benefits for Namibians.
Addressing the National Fisheries Indaba 2026 in Walvis Bay today, Ngurare said fisheries reform should focus on sustainable resource management, transparent access to fishing opportunities, increased value creation, job creation and improved livelihoods.
He also identified economic diversification and stronger State capacity as important elements in ensuring that Namibia’s marine resources contribute meaningfully to national development.
Ngurare emphasised that scientific evidence and reliable data should guide decisions concerning the management and use of the country’s fisheries resources.
He further highlighted the importance of strengthening accountability, data systems and institutional capacity across the fisheries sector to improve governance and ensure that resources are managed responsibly.
According to the Prime Minister, the reform process must now progress from evidence and consultation towards clear national policy direction, implementation and accountability.
He said the broader objective is to establish a sustainable, inclusive and competitive Blue Economy that creates opportunities and delivers lasting benefits for current and future generations of Namibians.
The National Fisheries Indaba 2026 brings together stakeholders to examine the future of Namibia’s fisheries sector and consider measures aimed at improving its sustainability, governance and contribution to the country’s economy.
