Teenager Honored as National Hero at Heroes Day

A 16‑year‑old boy from Omusati Region has been recognized as a national hero during Namibia’s 60th Heroes Day commemoration at Heroes Acre in Windhoek.
President Dr. Netumbo Nandi‑Ndaitwah conferred hero status on Cornelius Tulotokela Shimwaafeni of Omutundungu village, praising his courage after he risked his life to save twin infants from drowning in May this year.

The President said Cornelius acted “without hesitation” and demonstrated the spirit of heroism that continues to define Namibia.
The teenager reportedly jumped into a water pond to rescue the nine‑month‑old twins, telling witnesses afterwards, “I was going to die with them” if the rescue failed. His selfless act, the President noted, reflects the values of sacrifice and responsibility that Namibia’s heroes embody.

According to President Nandi‑Ndaitwah, Cornelius’ bravery invites Namibians to reflect on what heroism means in a free Namibia. “During the liberation struggle, heroism demanded confronting colonial forces. Today, it demands confronting poverty, inequality, corruption and hopelessness,” she said.
The recognition of Cornelius was a highlight of the commemoration, which also honored past liberation fighters and ordinary Namibians whose sacrifices secured the country’s independence.

The President urged citizens to carry forward the spirit of heroism into everyday life, building a peaceful and prosperous Namibia.
